Study # 3

Who can participate?  Adults with CVS

Autonomic dysfunction in adults with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome

Thangam Venkatesan, MD - Care for Adults with CVS

Medical College of Wisconsin - Division of Gastroenterology

Subjects are currently being recruited for participation in study at the Medical College of Wisconsin to start around December 2007.  The aim of the study is to prospectively evaluate the presence of autonomic dysfunction in patients with CVS. Autonomic function testing including the thermoregulatory sweat test, postural changes in heart rate and blood pressure and R-R variability responses to deep breathing and the Valsalva maneuver on EKG will be performed to screen for abnormalities in the automatic functions of patients with CVS. Mitochondrial dysfunction may play a part in these abnormalities. Studies will take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Criteria for participation

Adults who meet the following three criteria and had episodes at least 6 months before they were diagnosed.

1. Episodes that are similar in when they start and how long they last.

2. Three or more discrete episodes in the prior year

3. Absence of nausea and vomiting between episodes

In addition, all subjects will have had the necessary work up to exclude other organic diseases resulting in cyclic vomiting.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria includes the presence of other diseases that affect autonomic testing (e.g. any chronic pain disorder, or endocrinological, cardiovascular or other neurological diseases). This collaborative, multidisciplinary research effort between

the divisions of Gastroenterology and Neurology/Neurophysiology will be pivotal in exploring the research potential in this field and provide the much needed answers to this disease which still remains an enigma.
